Cheltenham Summer Institute

“There is another way?”

17th – 19th September 2024

An exciting ‘Headspace’ opportunity for Policy Makers, Leaders and innovative Practitioners in Learning Disability and Autism Services in a diversity of jurisdictions to take time out to engage in some ‘out-of-the-box’ experiences, thinking and deliberation.

Following a successful collaboration delivering EASPD’s Deinstitutionalisation and Inclusion ‘Lighthouse’ in 2023, the Summer Institute is again organised and facilitated by LivesthroughFriends, Vanguard Consulting, The PLAN Institute, and hosted by The Butterfly Garden (with accommodation at the nearby Leonardo Hotel).

Headspace for Re-Imagining

For the avoidance of doubt, the organisers all share the view that the thinking and assumptions that have dominated the provision of human services globally for the past 3 or 4 decades have proven to be both socially damaging and economically unsustainable. However, we all subscribe to the belief that the profound changes that will inevitably be required will not be brought about by ‘evangelical’ persuasion. In our view, successful and sustainable change results when systems are redesigned in the light of normative study, that is when people experience something live and tangible that enables them to challenge their own assumptions or the belief system within which they usually function.

Hence the content of the Summer Institute is concerned with delivering those ‘live and tangible’ experiences, intertwined with opportunities for reflection and deliberation, in society with the people served and those delivering in ‘other ways’ against the grain of contemporary systems.

While all of the organisers have strong, experientially derived proposals for system change our goal is simply to build curiosity for an alternative method of designing and managing the system.
