This online meeting of the HR Directors Professional Network will focus on three priority areas shaping workforce strategy, compliance, and operational practice across VODG member organisations. The session blends expert input with collaborative discussion, ensuring space for members to share experiences and identify collective actions.

HR teams are experiencing a rapid increase in employment-related correspondence generated using AI tools, including complex grievances and ‘without prejudice’ settlement proposals. Members have raised examples such as AI‑authored letters produced by firms like Grapple Law, which can appear legally sophisticated while containing inaccuracies or unrealistic demands.

Senior Associate, Trowers & Hamlins
Tom is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association and advises a wide range of employers across the country on both contentious and non-contentious matters.
Tom advises organisations on employment tribunal claims, including complex or high value claims and claims that carry reputational risk. Tom gets to know his clients and advises on strategy in accordance their aims and attitude to risk. Tom manages the tribunal claims process through to conclusion, including drafting robust pleadings, providing advocacy at preliminary hearings, drafting strike out and costs applications, compiling trial bundles, drafting witness statements, instructing and liaising with Counsel and, where appropriate, negotiating settlements.
Tom advises on a broad range of HR issues, such as grievance and disciplinary matters, redundancy situations and restructures, changing terms and conditions and managing difficult employees. Tom has particular expertise in unravelling sensitive, complicated and time-consuming grievances with an emphasis on taking the pressure away from the client. Tom drafts bespoke contracts of employment, policies and staff handbooks for employers, as well as conducting audits of existing documents to ensure compliance.
Tom also advises on the employment law aspects of mergers and acquisitions. Tom undertakes legal due diligence on transactional matters, advises on the application of TUPE and helps clients understand their obligations where TUPE applies.
Tom regularly delivers bespoke, interactive training for clients and presents at seminars on a range of topics.

Partner, Trowers & Hamlins
Laura is a Partner in the Employment department, and specialises in all aspects of employment law acting for a wide range of public and private sector employers. Laura takes pride in working as business partner to her HR clients, and really getting to know the ins and outs of each business and its commercial goals as an employer.
Laura regularly acts for respondents in complex and valuable tribunal claims. Laura advises on all employee relations matters including disciplinary and grievance issues, sickness absence, capability issues, restructures and redundancies and employment contracts.
Laura has particular experience of advising registered providers on governance compliant termination payments, various matters arising out of the Working Time Regulations such as sleep-ins and on call rotas and complex trade union issues including difficult consultation and de-recognition processes. Laura regularly assists clients on TUPE transactions, with particular focus on supporting the Public Sector department with local authority contracts.
