Let's Put Disability in the Frame

Together, let’s put disability in the frame.

We are often faced with a portrayal of social care that focuses on vulnerability, dependency, need and loneliness. The hopes, aspirations and needs of disabled adults and young people can get lost within the noise.

VODG believes that beyond the structures of social care reform, through an active promotion of the social model of disability, we can demonstrate the power of social care support to change lives for the better.

Co-produced with VODG members, the Let’s Put Disability in the Frame campaign aims to mobilise working age disabled community members to share their experiences of social care with local MPs, and draws on the relatively raw and unvarnished telling of people’s personal stories while seeking to achieve key outcomes.

Key campaign messages will include:
  • A positive portrayal of what social care can look like for working age disabled people,
  • Social care is not just for older people and care homes,
  • Disabled people should have a voice in decisions that affect them,
  • Lived experience of disability is a valuable resource in government decision making processes.
Through the campaign, we hope to:
  • Build greater understanding among local parliamentarians about social care and the needs and aspirations of disabled people in their communities.
  • Encourage parliamentarians to sign a ‘Will you represent me?’ pledge, agreeing to represent the voice of disabled people when specific asks are made.
  • Foster a commitment from parliamentarians to regular meetings with VODG and its members.
