Funding for charities a welcome first step, but now is the time to strengthen communities - VODG responds to Chancellor’s announcement
Today’s announcement of a £750million funding package for charities is a welcome first step to supporting the voluntary sector during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic but more is needed to support the sector during a time of rising demand and costs, according to the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG).VODG, a national body representing more than 100 voluntary sector providers supporting more one million disabled people has been working with other charities to campaign for the government to supply emergency funding for the sector.
Dr Rhidian Hughes, chief executive of VODG, said:
“Voluntary sector providers play a key role in supporting the 13.3million disabled people living in the country. The Chancellor’s announcement of funding to support the essential work of charities is a welcome first step towards ensuring people are not left without. The pressures on services are mounting, however, both in terms of demand and rising costs. Now is the time to invest in a sector and strengthen communities for the benefit of us all.”
