Trustee (Three Vacancies)
Voluntary Organisations Disability Group
About the Opportunity
The Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG) is seeking to appoint three new trustees to its Board. This is an opportunity to contribute to the strategic oversight and stewardship of a national charity representing leading voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise organisations that support disabled people, people with long-term conditions, families and carers.
VODG’s trustees ensure that the charity has a clear strategy and that its work remains aligned with its vision and charitable purposes. They safeguard VODG’s assets and reputation, oversee its financial sustainability and help ensure that the organisation is effectively governed and administered. Trustees serve as directors of the charity for company law purposes and as trustees for charity law purposes.
A Message From Our Chair of Trustees
Thank you for your interest in becoming a VODG trustee.
At a challenging time for our sector, VODG’s commitment to putting disabled people first has never been more important.
We are seeking three new trustees to help lead our next chapter, bringing curiosity, integrity, strategic insight and a commitment to disability rights, inclusion and collective leadership.
Who we are Looking for
Trustees are appointed to act in the best interests of VODG as a whole, rather than to represent a particular organisation, service or interest. At the same time, the experience trustees bring from leading their own organisations enriches the Board’s collective thinking.
As part of this recruitment, we are particularly interested in hearing from:
- Leaders of organisations dedicated to supporting people with sensory impairments.
- Leaders with experience of housing.
- Leaders with experience of services for children and young people.
- Leaders of larger member organisations, including those with a turnover of £100 million or above.
These areas may overlap and do not necessarily equate to one trustee vacancy each. Applications are welcomed from any eligible leader who shares VODG’s values and believes they can make a meaningful contribution. Appointments will be considered in the context of the overall balance of skills, experience, diversity and representation required by the Board.
Reflecting our Membership and Communities
VODG wants its Board to reflect the breadth of its membership and the people and communities its members support. This includes different types and sizes of member organisations, service specialisms, geographical reach and the communities served.
We warmly welcome applications from leaders across every part of our membership. We particularly encourage applications from disabled and/or Deaf leaders, leaders with lived experience of disability or long-term health conditions, people from minoritised ethnic communities, and others who remain under-represented in governance and leadership roles.
We recognise that diversity of background, identity, experience and perspective strengthens decision-making and increases the effectiveness of our work. All applications will be considered on their merits, alongside the overall skills, experience and balance of the Board.
Eligibility and Commitment
Applicants must be the Chief Executive, or hold an equivalent role, at a VODG member organisation.
Trustees are expected to:
-
Share and uphold VODG’s purpose, values and beliefs.
-
Demonstrate sound judgement, strategic thinking and effective decision-making.
-
Understand and accept the legal duties and responsibilities of trusteeship.
-
Contribute constructively and collaboratively as a member of the Board.
-
Commit to full attendance at quarterly Board meetings, relevant sub-committees and key VODG membership events, including the annual conference in June and AGM in November.
-
Keep informed about VODG’s work and actively support and promote the organisation and its membership.
Meetings take place in person and online, and usually alternate according to business requirements. Meetings length is approximately three hours (often shorter when online), with any strategy sessions lasting up to one day.
