For too long, the conversation around social care has been narrowed to ageing, care homes, and costs. But social care is about far more. It is about supporting people of all ages, in all walks of life, to live with dignity, independence and opportunity.
If, as a country, we are serious about ensuring people’s rights and entitlements to support are upheld, then we need a fundamental shift in perceptions, new ways of achieving sustainable social policy and a system that truly reflects the society it serves.
A National Care Service, changes to SEND and social security reforms, amongst many others, can only succeed if built on the voices and leadership of disabled people, utilising the expertise, impact and value of the voluntary sector.
