The next meeting of the Quality and Safeguarding professional network is now open for booking.
Our first speaker is Professor Shoumitro Deb, MBBS, FRCPsych, MD, Visiting Professor, Department of Brain Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, who will be introducing SPECTROM. SPECTROM is a staff training programme that has been coproduced with people with learning disabilities and their carers, support staff and service managers and trainers, supported by the Department of Health funding to help implement the NHSE STOMP initiative by reducing overmedication of people with learning disabilities. SPECTROM empowers staff by giving them detailed knowledge of mental health medicines so they can challenge inappropriate prescribing. This training is also designed to empower people with learning disabilities and their families by involving them in shared decision-making for care planning, including prescribing. Staff are also taught how to effectively engage and communicate with people with learning disabilities and help them build their skills. Staff are also taught how to effectively engage with professionals like doctors, community team members, and family members. An essential part of the training is to discuss how to support staff team members who are at the sharp end of service delivery.
Continuing the theme of co-production, we will next hear from Kirsty Milward, Head of Quality at FitzRoy. FitzRoy has committed to finding ways that are truly inclusive, which has lead to a review a number of processes and work focussing on the language used in communications, including communicating with people and the language used in practice. This is followed by Rebecca Hodgson on the theme of Working Together for Change.
Our final speaker is John Davison, Operations Director at BLS Stay Compliant who will be discussing a topic that a lot of members have requested; the differences between a Caldicott Guardian, a Data Protection Officer and a SIRO.
