Quality care falls victim to regulation

Bureaucracy, a lack of emphasis on quality improvement and no clear vision of the future are among the failings at the health and social care regulator Care Quality Commission outlined in a powerful new blog post today.

The organisation is withdrawing from quality, offers poor value for money and is letting down the public, providers and the people supported by social care. This dire state of affairs comes just as the health and care sector, in the spotlight after a series of care scandals, desperately require a firm focus on quality improvement, inspection and leadership.

In a joint post by the VODG and the English Community Care Association, the regulator's failings are outlined in no uncertain terms. Both organisations demand that the CQC and government get a grip on the situation.

Martin Green, ECCA chief executive, and John Adams, VODG general secretary, argue that the regulator must balance its emphasis on enforcement and non-compliance with feedback on what providers do well and how else they can drive up quality and standards in care.

The VODG is keen to receive feedback from members and non-members on this vital issue and spark more sector-led debate. Leave a comment on the blog post or email info@vodg.org.uk or contact us on Twitter @VODGHQ
