Community is key to independent living
Volunteers and community-based networks can make all the difference to independent living and social care, argues VODG member KeyRing.
With spending cuts biting and support hours being slashed, it's time that the sector got real about supporting people to connect to their community and to carve out a life which is not dependent on those paid to be with them. Tracy Hammond, communication and involvement director with support provider KeyRing, explains how volunteers help support people in the community and the rewards this approach reaps.
Hammond writes: "Neither the theory nor the reality of what we do is rocket science. People who are visible and valued in their community are less likely to be isolated, they become mentally healthier, more resourceful and give and receive support which is a natural part of friendship."
